Hands-On, Real Life Experience

My entire adult life I’ve worked with kids in various capacities. Fun fact: I’ve actually never had a job or volunteer role in which helping children wasn’t the goal. Children are my heart.

Here are some of the hands-on jobs I’ve held over the past 20+ years (apart from my 10+ years as a clinical social worker):

  • Swimming teacher and lifeguard at a specialized program for children with a fear of water

  • Volunteer in the Child Life department of Seattle Children’s Hospital, monitoring the playroom and mobile “art cart” program for medically fragile, dying, and bedridden children

  • Nanny to families with kiddos aged 3 months-13 years; including a family of 6 and a family with autistic and twice exceptional children

  • Mentor and art teacher for elementary aged kids at Bradley Children’s Hospital in their residential psychiatric program

  • Art instructor for teens at Rhode Island School of Design’s pre-college program and for Kindergartners in their local education program

  • Social worker at a homeless shelter for pregnant and parenting teens
